Shooting and Lighting Tips

We have three different locations to shoot at and each will come with its own problems. Scenes 1 and 4 take place in a morgue, which we are setting up in the back corner of a classroom in our college. Scene 2 takes place at the crime scene, which we are creating in a drama studio. Scene 3 takes place at a multi storey for which we actually be going out to a location.

General tips;

  • Use natural light as much as you can- it makes the colours appear more fresh and clean, shadows will come from more natural directors and it makes the clip appear more natural and appealing to watch. It's best to avoid times of day when sun is shining directly into your room- this will keep certain areas from being brighter or more blown out that others.
  • No digital zoom- digital zoom creates a grainy and pixelated video, whereas optical zoom creates the same effect without the worsened quality of the image.
  • Be prepared- ensure that all of the shots have been planned beforehand to avoid wasting time on the shooting day, and also make sure that you have all of the correct equipment (along with spares, such as an extra battery). Also try and go on a location recce beforehand to anticipate for any potential problems the location may cause.
  • Hold your shots- film for longer than necessary as it's better to have too much footage that you can easily cut down than not having enough.
  • Shoot with multiple cameras at once- not only will this save time but it will also help ensure continuity when cutting between two shots.
Scene 1 and 4 will be shot in complete natural light as we want the scene remains fairly dark. We will pulls the blinds down and maybe use an artificial light if it gets too dark outside.
Scene 2 will be filmed inside a studio with it's own lights. No natural light gets in but we will use the studio lights to our advantage- blue, red and white lights to make it appear as if it's an actual crime scene with police lights.
Scene 3 will again use natural light so as to ensure a natural looking darkness, although on the filming day we will bring lights just in case it's too dark.
