Institution and Company Notes

Me and Sam came up with our own production and distribution companies. This is because our film is very low budget so would be working with small, independent and fairly unknown companies- nothing like Warner Bros. or Paramount Pictures who could afford the best equipment and team members. The distribution company is called Kernow Distributions, because it makes the link to our Cornish target audience and relates to them, and also lets the audience know what the company does. It uses the Cornish flag to further represent it's target audience of the Cornish population, and the moving ocean image behind it has a similar effect. The production company is called Price Productions, which is also based off a last name (mine), and a word that lets the audience know the purpose of the company. The font used makes it appear professional and sophisticated and the reel (which will move in the final product) clearly connotes what industry the company is a part of. We decided on their names because we looked up well known distribution and production companies for inspiration, but attempted to avoid completely copying their names.

We must use copyright material because of copyright laws. If we use music that has been copyrighted, it means the artist has the potential to sue us. If we want the right to use the music without this risk, then we would have to get official permission off of the artist (with the possibility of a small fee).

Idents and Graphics Research

Idents

Idents always appear at the beginning of the movie, and their designs vary because every distribution and production company has a unique animation. The transition between each ident (there tends to be 1-3) is fading to black, which helps separate the companies from each other, and from the film. Depending on their design (how much detail it includes) and how well known the company is depends on how long the ident is, usually between 15-20 seconds. For independent companies they last around 5-10 seconds long as they're not a potential selling point for their film, as they're more unknown. The colour palette's used adapt to the genre of the film, e.g. with the later Harry Potter movies, the Warner Bros. logo uses darker shades.

Graphics

The font choices for graphics in films are always kept simpler than the title. Although they can vary depending on the film, they all keep to the same simplistic idea. Occasionally, the font style chosen can link to genre- although this is more common for the title. The colour palette used also can connote the genre, or is kept as a simple black or white, and the colour used will be bold, so as to stand out against the background. The transitions tend to be a fade, which helps the sequence flow smoothly. Although the order can be slightly different, and some films may contain more titles than other (usually larger, more expensive films such as the James Bonds franchise), but they all follow a general order:
While there are numerous variations most opening credits use some variation of the basic order. In the absence of opening credits, these roles will often be credited in reverse order at the beginning of the closing credits.

Evaluation

Our idents won't last for as long as the examples I looked at because they're independent, unknown companies with a small budget that can't be used as a selling point for our film. Companies like Marvel which are famously known worldwide can actually be a main factor towards selling their film. We will follow the same
