Initial Ideas

Me, Sam and Jess initially began brainstorming with script all based along the lines of loss. I was inspired by one of the short films made at my BFI residential that was about loss. We felt that in terms of a short film it had lots of potential to be very powerful and memorable. I came up with our first idea: "Dear my future self". It was going to be a narrated story of a child reading out a "dear my future self" letter that they had written, with the cinematography displaying the child's life before it being revealed at the end of the child's passing. A script was drawn up for this before we mutually agreed that we didn't feel it had the potential to be A-A* worthy, due to lack of variety in shots, editing and sound.

After this we looked on a website called short of the week, where we came across a 12 minute film called Unremarkable. Unremarkable is a crime drama- so a different twist on our original loss idea. We then decided on four different scenes and a non-linear narrative. Most of our inspiration came from this film. We agreed that this idea had significant amount more potential in terms of the media language we could experiment with. Straight away we began brainstorming how we could make morgue scenes work and make it look realistic- real organs, perhaps? Where could we film a morgue scene? Would a funeral directors let us? Probably not. A classroom with hospital equipment in to make it appear to be a morgue? That seems like it'll be the most realistic option and we're determined that we can make it work.
